LITERATURE REVIEW

Criteria

A literature review submitted to Majalah Kesehatan should demonstrate a coherent organizational structure and effectively integrate both summary and synthesis. Summary refers to the concise restatement of key points from existing sources, while synthesis involves the reorganization or reinterpretation of that information. This process may include offering a new perspective on established material, combining recent findings with previous interpretations, or mapping the intellectual development of a topic, including major scholarly debates. Depending on the purpose, the literature review may also include critical evaluation of the sources, guiding readers toward the most relevant and impactful contributions.

Manuscript Section:

Title

The title should be concise, clear, and contain no more than 20 words.

Authorship

Authorship details must be provided only on the Title and Author Page. Please do not include authorship information in the main manuscript.

Abstract and Keywords

The abstract must be written in both Bahasa Indonesia and English, with a maximum length of 250 words. It should include a brief introduction stating the background and objective of the study, followed by the methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. The abstract should be presented in a single paragraph, typed in Arial Narrow 10 pt, single-spaced.
Keywords should consist of 3 to 6 words, arranged in alphabetical order.

Introduction

The introduction provides a brief overview of the topic being reviewed, establishing the context and relevance of the literature review. It identifies the central research question or theme, defines the scope of the review, and explains the organizational structure (chronological, thematic, or methodological). The goal is to orient the reader and clarify why the topic is significant within the broader academic or practical field.

Searching Methods

The Searching Methods section describes how the literature was identified, selected, and filtered for inclusion in the review. This section ensures transparency, reproducibility, and academic rigor. It outlines the process the researcher used to find relevant studies, helping readers understand the breadth and limitations of the literature covered.

This section typically includes:

  • Databases Used : List the academic databases or digital libraries searched (e.g., Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed, ERIC, JSTOR).
  • Search Terms and Boolean Operators: Provide the keywords and phrases used in the search, along with Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) or truncation symbols.
  • Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria: Specify the criteria used to select studies (e.g., language, publication year, peer-reviewed status, type of study) and exclude others.
  • Screening Process: Explain how studies were screened—often a two-step process: (1) title and abstract screening, followed by (2) full-text review.
  • Quality Assessment (optional but common in systematic reviews): Briefly mention any tool used to assess the methodological quality or bias in selected studies (e.g., PRISMA, CASP, JBI).

Results

In literature reviews that follow a systematic approach (e.g., systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses), the Results section presents the outcomes of the literature search and selection process. This section does not contain experimental results, but rather:

  • The number of sources reviewed and selected (often visualized in a PRISMA flow diagram).
  • Descriptive statistics about the studies: publication years, geographic distribution, types of methods used, populations studied, etc.
  • Categorization of the studies based on themes, methodologies, or outcomes.

Discussion

The Discussion interprets and analyzes the results presented in the previous section. It connects patterns across studies, evaluates the strengths and limitations of existing research, and identifies gaps, contradictions, and areas of consensus.

Key functions of the discussion include: synthesizing findings from different studies and highlighting recurring themes or theoretical frameworks, critically evaluating methodologies or assumptions used in past research, pointing out research gaps or underexplored areas, explaining the relevance of findings to the field or to the researcher’s own project.

Conclusion

The conclusion summarizes the key insights gained from the reviewed literature. It reflects on what has been learned, identifies areas where research is lacking or inconclusive, and suggests possible directions for future study. If the review is part of a larger research project, this section can also explain how the literature informs the proposed research.
